The match between England and Ghana may have ended without a goal but not without events. England superstar Jude Bellingham was seen having words with Ghana’s coaching staff at the half-time whistle. Later in the match, Prince Adu was challenged by England defender Ezri Konsa which led to loud appeals from the Ghanaians for a penalty.
Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz said after the game that he was happy with the draw but when asked about the penalty appeal, he made little effort to mince words before cracking some jokes. “I’m not sure if VAR is still working in the World Cup. Do we still have VAR? Is it working?” Quiroz said.
“I have doubts about that because Ghana will have to give away another penalty, a clear penalty against England (Wookley).
American official Armando Villarreal was the VAR for Tuesday’s match in Foxboro, where Said Martinez of Honduras was the referee.
“We had our chances that they were lucky. They were very lucky. Again, VAR went for the coffee. It’s natural, I’d like to have my coffee too sometimes, but it was a clear penalty, a red card. Do you have any doubt about that? Those of you who watched the game have any doubt, was it just me in the game?
“At the end of the day, that’s why I say it was the right result. They play more time on the ball, we fight more, we fight better, we create our chances, they finally have a chance. I think they’re happy and I’m happy with the draw. I’m sorry for my sarcasm, but if I say such serious things, I hope they punish me, so I hope so.” The draw left England and Ghana on four points in Group L, with Croatia just one point behind them in third place, having previously beaten Panama.
