Brazil legend Romario has dubbed Lionel Messi “Creque da Copa (Cup standout)” and called him “Monstro! (Monster!)” in his highest praise, while backing Vinicius Jr to make this World Cup and predicting Brazil will top their group.
Writing in O Globo in Los Angeles, Romario said the 3-0 win over Haiti was a marked improvement on Morocco’s opener and that Brazil had finally begun to impose their game from the start. Romario is a Brazilian football legend who scored 55 goals in 70 international matches, won the 1994 World Cup with Brazil and was named the tournament’s best player, and is recognized as one of the greatest strikers the game has ever produced.
Romario was impressive against Vinicius who was man of the match in both games and scored two goals. “This could be his World Cup,” he wrote. “He’s flying high so far.” He also singled out Lucas Paqueta, who gave the midfield a new dynamism by combining defensive work to set up the attack, and Mathias Cunha, whose second-half cameo against Morocco earned him a starting spot. “He stepped up and definitely earned his spot with goal, determination and quick, accurate touches,” Romario wrote.
As for Rafinha’s injury, Romario expressed regret but said Ryan could prove a useful substitute against Scotland, although he warned the match would be tougher than Haiti. “The Scottish side press hard and are physically strong attackers,” he wrote. “But our team is improving technically and mentally and I believe we will finish first in the group.”
Romario reserved his highest praise for Messi, keeping his eye on him throughout the tournament.

France, Germany, Argentina and England had confirmed their partiality, he said, while Portugal and Spain had disappointed but should not be ruled out. “They will definitely raise their level,” he added.
