Beating powerhouse Brazil was the start of some iconic celebrations for Norway who have outdone themselves with their song of simple joy. It’s a remix of Two Lines, titled by streaming artists Futuristic Hitz, although the original ‘We’re Never Go Home’ was a 2021 hit by Kungs or French tech house DJ Valentin Brunel.
As Erling Brout Haaland led the Row Row Viking Row celebration, drumming to chants, Tim Selley broke into a team song in their New York dressing room.
It’s really just a line that says on repeat: “We’re never going home wah ooh ooh” as they come in a circle and jump out at full decibel.
Red drums aren’t the only pieces that make up the nose. The team travels with a red suitcase and a straw speaker. The song ‘We’re Never Go Home’ is a very literal declaration of intent, with Martin Odegaard chanting. Then the towels are used as a lasso.
While the Viking line has captured the world’s imagination, it is a fan-started cell. The song is a team ritual following the 2021 hit song – which rounded the peak chart positions in Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
In their next match – and nothing seems impossible, now that Haaland have declared that they are one of the best teams in Europe – they meet another team determined at ‘home’, precisely “It’s Coming Home” aka England, looking to end the 60-year wait for another star.
This Coming Home started out as an emotional clarion call but is now peak meme material. Humor abounds, but the emotion remains. Norway has chosen a simpler line – which directly means extending their stay in the tournament and not returning to Norway.
