FIFA World Cup 2026 Leading Goal-scorers: France beat Sweden 3-0 in the round of 32 on Tuesday night as Kylian Mbappe continued his sensational World Cup goal-scoring form.
Mbappe has secured a second straight entry into France’s round of 16, where they will face Paraguay on July 5. The France captain, playing in his third World Cup, broke the all-time record for knockout goals by scoring nine goals in the World Cup. Mbappe is also breathing down the neck of Argentine superstar Lionel Messi on the all-time World Cup goal-scoring chart as he has scored a whopping 18 goals at the tournament, just one more than Messi’s 19 in six editions.

“I know a lot about who I am, how I play, what I have to do, but it’s not just about me,” Mbappe said through a translator. “The whole team knows what needs to be done. It’s a new tournament from today. We played well, but we were timid. We could have done better in the beginning.”

Mbappe leads the race for the Golden Boot ahead of Messi with six goals to his name. Meanwhile, Norwegian heavyweight Erling Haaland also scored five goals in his World Cup debut with an 86th-minute winner over Ivory Coast. French forward Ousmane Dembele and Brazilian javelin thrower Vinicius Junior also remain in the race with four goals each.
