Lionel Messi misses his second penalty at the 2026 World Cup, his second of the tournament after a failed attempt from the spot against Austria. Messi had a golden chance to equalize for Argentina against Egypt on Monday after the Latin American side fell behind 0-1, but his shot was tipped by goalkeeper Mostafa Shober.
In the 22nd minute, Messi took a spot kick after Nicolas Tagliafico was fouled by Haysem Hasan in the box but Shober guessed right and cleared the ball away. Earlier, Yasser Ibrahim’s 15th-minute header gave Egypt the lead.
It was Messi’s fourth World Cup miss, with the Argentina captain previously missing matches against Iceland in 2018, Poland in 2022 and now Austria in 2026 as well as Egypt.
Last month, he had a penalty wide off target in the World Cup match between Argentina and Austria. Messi missed a chance in the 9th minute after fouling teammate Lautaro Martinez in the opposition box.
He would eventually get on the scoresheet, scoring a brace and becoming the leading goal-scorer in World Cup history, surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose.
