When Scotland faced Haiti FIFA World Cup The opener at the Boston Stadium in Foxborough on Saturday was Craig Ferguson, a 22-year-old Scotland fan who walked more than 4000km from Los Angeles to Boston to watch the match and raise money for charity. As Scottish fans flock to the USA this week to see their country play in the World Cup after 28 years, Ferguson embarked on what he calls ‘The Tartan Trek’ in February to support Scotland and raise more than £1 million for Scottish Action for mental health. Ferguson, who arrived in Boston in a Scotland jersey and kilt, spoke of the challenges he faced during the walk from Los Angeles to Boston.

“I didn’t think I could do it, I was close to giving up at times,” Ferguson told WCVB NewsCenter 5 upon his arrival in Boston. “But they don’t teach the word ‘give up’ in Scotland. And all of you who have supported me from the beginning and believed I could do it.

The 22-year-old walked a similar route from Scotland to Germany ahead of Euro 2024, undertaking the walk to honor the father of a friend who died by suicide. The 22-year-old started walking for the World Cup from Los Angeles in February and traveled from the city to Boston. The 22-year-old wore his Scottish jersey and kilt for the walk and was trying to raise money for Scottish Action for Mental Health, the country’s biggest mental health service. During the fundraising, he was also supported by the Scottish Government as he raised over a million pounds for the charity. WCVB NewsCenter 5 reported that Ferguson used four pairs of shoes during the strenuous walk. A day before the walk on the Boston Common, Ferguson spoke to NBC Boston about his walk.

“To keep that dream alive and to see and say, ‘We can do this,’ honestly makes me emotional to think about. Focusing on one of the biggest sporting events, that’s the perfect way to do it. I think the people who are watching are the exact type of people that we need to get that message across.” Ferguson told NBC Boston.

As he walked across Boston Common on Friday, the Scottish fan was asked if he would walk to Boston Stadium in Foxborough to watch the Scotland-Haiti Group C match. “No more walking. I’ll take a taxi,” Ferguson told WCVB NewsCenter 5.
