“It was incorrectly reported on FIFA’s commentary information system that Paredes had been sent off by referee Slavko Vincic for shoving Spain’s Eric Garcia in the throat. Paredes’ red card was removed shortly after and FIFA confirmed to BBC Sport that no disciplinary action had been taken at the time,” the report said. However, a Fifa investigation is still ongoing into the ugly events that took place after Spain beat Argentina 1-0 at the final whistle to win the World Cup.
It is unclear what the provocation was but in videos floating around social media, Garcia can be seen falling to the ground seconds after the referee blew the final whistle. He then gets up and has a heated exchange with Paredes who then pushes Garcia away with a hand on the latter’s neck.
In addition, Argentina defender Nahuel Molina also tried to hit Rodri who ran off the field to celebrate the win. Argentina coach Roberto Ayala was also seen trying to punch Dani Olmo in the face. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and other players rushed to defuse the situation.

On Monday, FIFA launched an investigation after Spain’s celebrations for beating Argentina in the World Cup final took an ugly turn when players briefly clashed on the field.
FIFA said in a statement that “its Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate possible violations (of the FIFA Disciplinary Code) regarding post-match incidents.” The brief statement gave no timetable for the investigation and did not name Paredes, who could face a suspension even if he was not shown a red card after the game.
Spain needed extra time to win Sunday’s final 1-0 after Argentina were reduced to 10 men. Enzo Fernandes was sent off after 90 minutes with a second yellow card.
Argentina’s players stood on the podium with their backs to their fans as the Spanish team lifted the trophy. It was an unusual show of disrespect for the new champions, who gave their opponents a guard of honor to collect their medals.
